SOFTWARE DEVELOPER POSITION AT THE RESEARCH LIBRARY OF THE LOS ALAMOS
NATIONAL LABORATORY
The Research Library of the Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking
for a software developer to support a grant-funded digital library
research effort. The open position is limited term, 2 years.
The successful candidate will work on the Digital Library Research and
Prototyping Team. That Team operates by assimilating cutting-edge
concepts from information science, computer science, digital library
research, as well as web research and practice, and using those concepts
to rethink various aspects of scholarly communication. The Team is
involved in high-profile research projects funded, amongst others, by
the Library of Congress, the National Science Foundation and the Andrew
W. Mellon Foundation.
Specifically, the successful candidate will work collaboratively with a
project team at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and Cornell
University in prototyping and software development in the context of the
NSF-funded Pathways project that explores scholarly communication as a
global, cross-repository workflow. Information on Pathways is available

Required Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
• Significant programming experience in Java and at least one of the
following languages: C, C++, Perl, XSLT, Python;
• Significant experience working with and developing on Linux/Unix
platforms;
• Understanding of, and experience with, applying standards such as XML,
XML Schema, SOAP, DOM, XPath, XPointer, UML, RDF, OWL, and associated tools;
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a team leader and
with members of a technical team in achieving common goals;
• Demonstrated ability to work autonomously in the realm of discovering,
exploring, and assimilating technical information, and in analyzing
problems, proposing, and implementing solutions;
• Demonstrated effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
Desired Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
• Understanding of, and experience with applying library-related
standards, such as OAI-PMH, OpenURL, info URI, SRU/W, PREMIS, METS, OAIS;
• Experience with development in the context of scholarly repository
software solutions such as DSpace, eprints, Fedora, etc.;
• Understanding of the process of scholarly communication;
• Demonstrated ability to rapidly learn new technologies;
• Demonstrated ability to work beyond the boundaries of a single team, a
single institution.
Education, Training, or Licensing
Degree (bachelor’s but preferably master’s) in Computer Science,
Engineering, Information Science, Library Science or related field and
relevant high-level experience in programming, or equivalent combination
of education and experience.
