Purpose of Meeting

The Santa Fe UPS meeting in October 1999 resulted in a set of technical agreements for metadata harvesting known as the Santa Fe convention.   There is general consensus that this pull model of metadata harvesting is sound. However, a review of the details of the technical agreements is mandated by:

This is designed as an intensive working meeting with the expected output being a proposal for an implementable and stable technical agreement for metadata harvesting.  The proposal produced from the meeting will be disseminated for review and comment by participants in the Open Archives initiative (the Steering Committee, Technical, and general mailing lists).  Final adoption of the proposals is subject to the decision of the Open Archives initiative Steering Committee.

The meeting is supported by the Digital Library Federation.

Hotel information

The Clarion Hotel (Ramada Inn) is holding 10 room blocks for us for 9/6, 9/7, 9/8 and 9/9. The deadline for the release of the room block is Aug. 25th. The cost is $89/night for a single or double, plus 11% tax.

Please make your own reservation and be prepared to guarantee with a credit card. Ask for the Open Archives initiative (OAI) group rate.

The hotel is 2.1 miles from Campus. The hotel has a shuttle service, which we will charter for transportation between the meeting room and the hotel.

Expenses

The Digital Library Federation has offered support for this meeting [many thanks to Dan Greenstein!]. The formula being used is similar to the one we used for the Santa Fe meeting: The DLF will cover reasonable room and board for all as well as travel expenses for those who require it, i.e. for those who can not get travel support via their own institutions or other funding.

Make sure to keep all your expense receipts. In order to be refundable by DLF, you will have to fill out a form [which we will provide] and to deliver your receipts.

Travel

Ithaca has an airport served by one airline, US Airways. Flights to Pittsburgh are real planes (DC9 jets), flights to everywhere else are props with flights to and from Philadelphia being the wonderful 19 seater Beechcraft (noise, bump, vibrate, and some terror for those inclined towards claustrophobia). A nearby bigger airport is Syracuse with more airlines - 1.5 hours away. If you decide to stay over Saturday night we can direct you to things to do.
